Spring 2023

The Advanced Grid Institute (AGI) is a collaborative partnership between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Washington State University (WSU) on a mission to solve critical grid modernization challenges. Since 2018, the AGI has been working to accelerate research and development of advanced grid modeling tools and operational technologies our future power grid will require. This quarterly newsletter brings you research updates, timely announcements, news, events, and developments of interest to the AGI community.

Joint Appointments

Joint appointment programs between national laboratories and universities provide opportunities for university faculty and DOE laboratory researchers to collaborate across institutions to a level and breadth that would not be possible without this opportunity. These appointments enhance the way individuals contribute their unique research capabilities and expertise to advance the science mission of both institutions. In addition, these appointments present a distinctive collaboration that also benefits students, often producing a strong pathway for internships and networking for early career professionals.

 

Jonathan Male, who was recently named the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Director of the Systemwide Office for National Laboratory Partnerships for WSU, shared that joint appointees serve as “champions for the joint institutes, having already fully embraced the leveraging of positive synergies between the two organizations in order that one plus one can equal greater than two.”

 

Through joint appointments, AGI is able to work effectively toward the goal of winning future collaborative funding, leveraging efforts such as the Distinguished Graduate Research Program, and building joint proposals and projects around key capabilities.

Pathways Toward a Clean Energy Grid 

AGI Industry Day 2023

Join the AGI on August 30, 2023, as we discuss new research and accelerated impact toward creating a clean energy grid. With a variety of electricity providers and utilities, a diverse portfolio of generation sources, and a vibrant ecosystem of research and development partners, the Pacific Northwest is uniquely positioned to lead strategically in the future of a clean energy future. Additionally, our regional power industry leaders and researchers have a successful track record of developing equitable policies and novel technologies that will bring the country closer to meeting ambitious clean energy goals. 

 

Our keynote speaker for the event will be Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Grid Systems and Components in the Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity. Plan to join us, as AGI Industry Day will bring together colleagues from state and federal agencies, utilities, industry, national laboratories, and academia for a day of lively panel discussions and presentations.

 

There will be a technical meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. followed by a reception and posters at the WSU Wine Science Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information visit the event website.

Toward a Resilient Electric Power Grid

  The interconnected North American power system that underpins our modern society has been recognized as the top engineering achievement of the 20th century.  Access to affordable and reliable electricity enables many of the things that we take for granted today, and has enabled unparalleled economic growth and significantly enhanced our quality of life.  And while this vast power system remains affordable and reliable now and into the foreseeable future, there nevertheless remains potential hazards that threaten the resilience of this critical infrastructure. As part of a presentation on the electric power grid, Jeff Dagle, PNNL Chief Electrical Engineer and AGI co-director, introduced the engineering basics of the power grid, discussed prior blackouts and lessons learned gleaned by engineers, delved into resilience concepts, and summarized steps being undertaken to understand and enhance power system resilience in the future.
