Fall 2024

The Advanced Grid Institute (AGI) is a collaborative partnership between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Washington State University (WSU) on a mission to solve critical grid modernization challenges. Since 2018, the AGI has been working to accelerate research and development of advanced grid modeling tools and operational technologies our future power grid will require. This quarterly newsletter brings you research updates, timely announcements, news, events, and developments of interest to the AGI community.  

AGI Day—Gathering for a Clean Energy Future

The future of the electric grid relies on the passion of researchers, educators, industry, and students as the next-generation workforce to address complex problems like decarbonization, security, resilience, and flexibility. AGI welcomed over 100 in-person and online attendees to AGI Day, hosted in Richland, WA, to address not only challenges but also opportunities and solutions. The annual event was themed “Nexus of Power Systems Engineering and Advanced Analytics Toward a Resilient and Decarbonized Grid.” Read more about AGI Day and watch recap videos here. 

The DGRP Program Prepares Students for Success in School and Beyond

The Distinguished Graduate Research Program (DGRP) is an opportunity for Ph.D. students at WSU to elevate their studies by collaborating between the classroom at WSU and research laboratories at PNNL. Read about experiences from DGRP participants. 

AGI Seminar Recap

Over the course of the Spring 2024 academic semester, AGI brought in speakers as a part of the AGI seminar series. The goal of the seminars was to bring in industry experts to highlight the important research and field work that is being done in the region in the energy sector. The first speaker was Alison Colotelo from PNNL. Colotelo is a part of the hydropower program at PNNL and is the leader of the Waterpower Systems Science and Engineering team. Read more about her presentation, “Hydropower & the Grid.”

Karla Grimaldo (left), an administrative coordinator at PNNL, is dedicated to supporting the the Power Systems Modeling group. She ensures smooth operations by managing logistics for sponsor visits, events, and contributes to the EIOC and now AGI team. 

 

Jake Baumgartner (middle) joined WSU as the marketing and promotions coordinator for ESIC and AGI. Baumgartner graduated from the University of South Dakota with a major in Strategic Communications with an emphasis in Marketing and Public Relations. He enjoys building organizations to their fullest potential and overcoming the challenges that growth entails.

 

Ginger Krause (right), an administrative coordinator at PNNL, is a seasoned professional adept at providing multi-level support. She finds great satisfaction in building networks that drive collective success and innovation, and she looks forward to applying those skills to foster growth and connectivity with AGI.
