Spring 2025

The Advanced Grid Institute (AGI) is a collaborative partnership between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Washington State University (WSU) on a mission to solve critical grid modernization challenges. Since 2018, the AGI has been working to accelerate research and development of advanced grid modeling tools and operational technologies our future power grid will require. This quarterly newsletter brings you research updates, timely announcements, news, events, and developments of interest to the AGI community.

Mark your calendars and save the date for AGI Day! Each year, AGI hosts AGI Day, bringing together industry experts, researchers, students, and regional stakeholders for discussions on innovative solutions to emerging challenges in power and energy systems. AGI Day typically welcomes around 100 on-site attendees and 100 virtual attendees. This year’s AGI Day is scheduled for August 20 and will focus on building and operating an affordable, reliable, and secure regional grid. More AGI Day information will become available on our website. Register today!

Introducing New Board Members

AGI would like to introduce four new industry advisory board (IAB) members; Mark Lauby, William Rambo, Avnaesh Jayantilal, and Mike Diedesch. The new IAB members will help advise and lead the institute into the future. IAB members help AGI tap into the expertise of industry experts from a range of topics within AGI’s research scope. Learn more about our new board members here.

AGI Workshop on Power Systems Research Opportunities and AI/ML Innovation

image-2-1

AGI hosted a half-day workshop at WSU to convene experts from diverse fields—power systems, machine learning, advanced analytics, applied mathematics, Earth systems science, risk modeling, and economics. The goal was to identify critical research gaps in grid science that could be addressed through interdisciplinary collaboration, especially at the intersection of power systems and AI/ML. Read more about the workshop here.
