Spring 2026

The Advanced Grid Institute (AGI) is a collaborative partnership between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Washington State University (WSU) on a mission to solve critical grid modernization challenges. Since 2018, the AGI has been working to accelerate research and development of advanced grid modeling tools and operational technologies our future power grid will require. This quarterly newsletter brings you research updates, timely announcements, news, events, and developments of interest to the AGI community.

Mark your calendars and save the date for AGI Day! Each year, AGI hosts AGI Day, bringing together around 100 on-site and 100 virtual industry experts, researchers, students, and regional stakeholders for discussions on innovative solutions to emerging challenges in power and energy systems. This year’s AGI Day is scheduled for August 19 and will focus on innovating planning, operations, and resilience in the Northwest power grid. More AGI Day information will become available on our website, including registration. Stay tuned!

Xiaoli Duan (left) joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2010 as a research scientist in the electricity infrastructure and building division. Throughout her career here, she has held leadership roles as a project manager, program manager, and team leader. Duan also oversees multi-million-dollar portfolios in energy resilience, building control optimization, grid analytics, and grid AI.

 

Bethany Lee (right) is a communications professional at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, specializing in creating impactful content and fostering engagement across various platforms. With a focus on storytelling, Lee works to amplify the Laboratory’s mission and achievements, ensuring PNNL’s research and innovations reach key audiences. Learn more about our AGI team here.

Researchers at PNNL and WSU are Working to Strengthen Power Grid Reliability
