AGI Day Recap

AGI Recap 2025

Recently, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Washington State University (WSU) Advanced Grid Institute (AGI), hosted their annual AGI Day conference. The conference brought together national laboratory researchers, academia, students, industry, and regional and state stakeholders and representatives to discuss topics around this year’s theme, “Building and Operating an Affordable, Reliable, and Secure Regional Grid.” Read More.

Special Topic Session: Wildfire Challenges

Wildfire Session

The special topic of Advanced Grid Institute (AGI) Day 2025 was “Wildfire Challenges and Mitigation Strategies.” The panel was hosted by Larry Bekkedahl, Senior VP of Advanced Energy Delivery at Portland General Electric; Andre Coleman, data scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL); Kelly Miller, Wildfire Mitigation Program Manager at the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA); and Brad Heilman of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory. The AGI seminars of the semester highlighted three tightly connected themes shaping the future of the electric power grid: orchestrating complex distribution system operations, accurately modeling inverter-based resources, and integrating artificial intelligence—particularly large language models—into grid analytics and decision support. Taken together, the talks by Dr. Monish Mukherjee, Dr. Jinho Kim, and Dr. Yousu Chen traced a clear narrative of a grid that is becoming more decentralized, more software-defined, and more data- and computation-intensive, and they pointed toward the kinds of tools and frameworks needed to manage this transformation.
