Office of Electricity Showcases Grid Storage Launchpad Dedication

Eric Hsieh, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Storage with the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Electricity (OE), published an article highlighting the dedication of the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The facility will serve as a national hub for testing, collaboration, and education, helping to meet DOE's long-term energy goals. Read more here.

More Electricity Transmission Lines Would Lower Costs, Increase Reliability

The DOE's Grid Deployment Office teamed up with PNNL and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to study transmission expansion. Energy storage plays a critical role in grid resilience for transmission planning. PNNL Drives Energy Innovation in Goldendale

Klickitat Valley Health (KVH) in Goldendale, WA, recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new hydrogen fuel cell and central utility plant upgrades, alongside the launch of the Goldendale Climate Resilience Microgrid. KVH, part of DOE's Energy Storage for Social Equity (ES4SE) program, collaborated with the ES4SE team on this initiative. These advancements are key to enhancing community resilience.

PNNL sponsored and attended GridFWD 2024, a conference advancing energy markets and grid modernization, held in Banff, Canada. PNNL staff participated in discussions on effective transitions to organized markets, providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector.

PNNL at the NASPI Work Group Hybrid Meeting

PNNL experts attended the recent North American SynchroPhasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Hybrid Meeting, sharing advancements in real-time grid monitoring and data-driven solutions to boost grid reliability. Through six engaging technical presentations, PNNL representatives demonstrated the Laboratory's commitment to grid modernization and renewable energy integration. This collaborative effort, funded by the DOE and supported by PNNL and the Electric Power Research Institute, highlights PNNL's leadership in synchrophasor technology and grid analytics. This technology is to crucial to grid reliability. Utilities are finding success using synchrophasor technology to help monitor energy storage facilities that are being deployed in their systems.

Experts Discuss Lithium-Ion Battery Safety at Workshop

PNNL supported a two-day workshop, "Charging Forward: Addressing Public Safety Concerns in Community Electrification," hosted by the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate's National Urban Security Technology Laboratory in collaboration with the Fire Department of New York and the U.S. Fire Administration. The workshop brought together a small group of public safety leaders and industry experts to discuss lithium-ion battery safety. A report will follow, offering practical steps to enhance public safety as energy innovations continue to evolve.

Protect Yourself with Proper PPE

When working with energy storage systems, safety is paramount. That's why it's important to have appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) ready to roll. 

 

PPE can include, but is not limited to:

  • Hard hat
  • Safety glasses
  • Insulated gloves
  • Safety shoes
  • High-visibility vest
  • Earplugs

To properly use PPE:

  • Conduct a safety assessment
  • Select the appropriate PPE
  • Provide training for proper use
  • Assess and replace old or damaged PPE
